Ragdolls truly live up to their name. The name refers to the tendency of the Ragdoll to relax all its muscles as soon as it is picked up and to completely relax once it is in your arms, but they have other characteristics that are associated with a ragdoll: they are friendly, affectionate, obedient, gentle, and serene. Although they have many good qualities, it is the personality of the Ragdoll that has made so many people fall in love with them!
Ragdolls are very people-oriented, they love to be around people, and they form strong bonds with their owners. Many Ragdoll owners report that their cat waits for them at the door until they come home and follows them throughout the house like a shadow. Ragdoll owners are rarely alone; Ragdolls want to participate in everything that happens at home and love to "help" their owner with whatever they are doing. Because Ragdolls like to stay close to you, you must always be careful not to step on them. Fortunately, they forgive and forget quickly. Since Ragdolls are very social, you should have at least two cats if you are often away.
Ragdolls are calm but also active and love to play. Due to their easygoing nature, Ragdolls get along well with other pets in the house, and children are also not a problem. They rarely use their claws when they play. Ragdolls can easily live in a small apartment and are happy to stay indoors. However, you must play with them and provide them with cat toys and a scratching post. In fact, Ragdolls should never go outside alone because they are (too) trusting and see everyone as a friend. This trusting nature is also reflected in how they let people handle them: you can lay a Ragdoll on its back and carry it like a baby, or lay it over your shoulders like a scarf. And, unlike other cats, Ragdolls love to be petted on their belly.
Ragdolls are usually not very talkative and have a soft voice. However, they do have a large vocabulary, and often Ragdoll owners can distinguish and recognize the various "meows," "mews," "chirps," and "rrrrs"!
Ragdolls are less stubborn than many other cats can often be, and they can easily be trained. They usually learn the same tricks as dogs, such as retrieving a toy. They can also be trained to walk on a leash or to use only the scratching post for their claws. Ragdolls will usually not turn your house upside down when you're not home, as they are so calm and prefer to stay on the ground rather than jump on top of cabinets. Because they do not have an undercoat, Ragdolls shed relatively little.
Remember that these are the general characteristics of a Ragdoll, and as with any cat breed, this may not apply to every individual Ragdoll. Every Ragdoll is an individual!
